Pool & Spa Care FAQs

When it comes to the upkeep and maintenance of your pool or spa, you no doubt have many questions. If your question is not listed, our team is happy to help.

What is a Sanitiser?
A sanitiser is a product that kills bacteria. Chlorine is the most common sanitising method, while other methods can include bromine and peroxide-based products.
What is an Oxidiser?
An oxidiser is designed to destroy waste material in the water, including spent sanitiser compounds and organic contamination that can otherwise support bacteria or algae growth.
How long should I run my pool?
Running time depends on the individual pool and equipment. As a general best practice, residential pools may run around eight hours a day in summer, reducing through cooler months while water quality is monitored.
When should I test my water?
Pool or spa water should be tested regularly. Weekly testing is ideal during periods of high use, with frequency adjusted through cooler months according to conditions and usage.
How can I reduce the running cost of my pool?
Do not simply switch filtration off. Efficient variable-speed pumps, sensible filtration schedules and robotic cleaners can help reduce energy use while keeping the water moving and filtered.
How can I reduce the maintenance on my pool?
Keep surrounding areas tidy, maintain filtration and use efficient equipment. A robotic cleaner or scheduled maintenance program can also reduce the amount of manual work required.
What type of chlorine should I use?
The right chlorine product depends on the pool type and water balance. Using an unsuitable product can create staining, high calcium or corrosion problems, so ask for advice before changing products.
How does a salt chlorinator work?
A salt chlorinator passes a low-voltage current through an electrode, creating electrolysis that converts salt in the water into a chlorine sanitiser.
Why do family and friends get skin problems in my pool?
Skin or eye irritation can be linked to chloramines or incorrect pH rather than a true chlorine allergy. Balanced water is important for swimmer comfort.
Do I need to use algaecide if I do not have algae?
An algae preventative can be part of a regular maintenance routine alongside correct pH, sanitiser levels, filtration and circulation.
Why does my pool turn green?
Green water is commonly associated with algae growth encouraged by low sanitiser, high pH, poor circulation or inadequate filtration.
